Striga hirsuta is a 2 to 6 (rarely up to 20) cm high, parasitic , annual plant . It grows slender, unbranched or branched in the middle of the stem , has sparsely stiff hairs to ciliate, the trichomes are close-fitting. The stem is indistinctly square and furrowed. The reduced leaves are 3 to 15 × 0.5 to 1 mm long, are linear, have entire margins and are indistinctly veined. They are opposite or almost opposite and are shorter than the internodes . The underside is covered with a row of stiff-haired trichomes along the midrib and the edge, the top is covered with stiff-haired trichomes only along the edge.

The flowers are opposite in an open, grape-shaped inflorescence that is longer than the vegetative shoot. The flowers are each accompanied by two bracts , on the lower part of the inflorescence these are 6 to 15 × 1 mm in size, narrowly lanceolate and longer than the calyx . The upper bracts are also lanceolate, but shorter than the calyx. Like the leaves, the top and bottom of the bracts are hairy.

The calyx is ten ribs and 4 to 5.5 mm long. The calyx tube has a length of 2 to 3 mm and is covered with five identically shaped, awl-shaped, 1.5 to 2.5 mm long calyx teeth. The calyx teeth and calyx tubes are about the same length. The crown is dark red and has a yellow throat. The corolla tube is 8 to 10 (rarely up to 12) mm long, curved, widened above the calyx and sparsely hairy glandular. The lobes of the lower lip are 2 to 3 (rarely up to 5) × 1 to 2 (rarely up to 3) mm long and conversely ovoid. The upper lip is 1 to 2 × 2 to 4 mm in size and notched.
