Strigel (artist family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Strigel family was a late Gothic artist family who created and lived in Memmingen . Their work and influence is summarized together with the artist family Sichelbein under the term Memminger Schule .

The following people are known:

  1. Hans Strigel the Elder (first document 1430, † 1462), painter
    1. Ivo Strigel (* 1430; † 1516), sculptor
      1. Bernhard Strigel (* around 1460; † May 4, 1528), painter and house and court painter of Emperor Maximilian I , most important representative of the family
    2. Hans Strigel the Younger (* 1450; † 1479), sculptor
Assignment unknown or uncertain
  • Johann Strigel the Elder (document from 1442 for the main altar St. Bartholomä in Zell near Oberstaufen), sculptor and painter
  • Michael Strigel (around 1445, † around 1519), painter
  • Claus Strigel (* before 1500, † after 1500), painter (according to ADB probably another son of Ivo Strigel and brother of Bernhard)

The family then died out, or at least their traces are lost.

The family of painters is dedicated to a museum in Memmingen with an exhibition, the Strigel Museum in the Antoniterhaus .

Another possible non-artistic branch is as follows, according to ADB:

  1. Ivo Strigel (* 1431; † 1516), doctor, studied with Melanchthon
    1. Viktorin / Victorinus Strigel , (* December 16 or 26, 1524 in Kaufbeuren; † June 26, 1569 in Heidelberg), Lutheran theologian and humanist, university professor in Wittenberg, Jena, Leipzig and Heidelberg
