Stripe is an online payment service based in San Francisco, California . The company's services are offered in 25 countries. Stripe uses a self-learning fraud prevention system. At the beginning of 2018 the company had 900 employees.

The brothers Patrick and John Collison have been developing Stripe's software since 2009. In January 2010, Stripe received seed capital from Y Combinator .

The start-up is funded by CapitalG ( Alphabet ), Sequoia Capital , Visa , American Express , Peter Thiel and Elon Musk . In 2012, Stripe received $ 18 million from its investors in a financing round. Forbes estimated annual revenue of $ 450 million in 2016 . In 2016, CapitalG valued the company at $ 9 billion following a $ 150 million investment.

In 2016, Stripe introduced a fraud detection radar service that uses machine learning and launched the Atlas platform, which enables start-ups to set up businesses in the United States.

Since June 2017 Stripe has also been offering its service in Germany. The first customers included the Internet service provider Jimdo , the cleaning aid broker Book a Tiger and the Croove platform .

In 2017, Stripe and other investors invested 93 million US dollars in Monzo, an online bank from Great Britain . Another financing round for Monzo followed in 2018 with a total of £ 85 million.

That same year, Stripe received another $ 245 million funding from Tiger Global Management, DST Global and Sequoia. The company was valued at $ 20 billion.

In 2018, the company introduced its own credit cards. The company had announced that it would no longer accept Bitcoin payments from April 2018 . According to an intelligence service, Stripe was reacting to lower demand, slow transactions and high fees.

In 2019, Stripe was ranked # 1 among the largest fintech companies in America according to Forbes . The company was valued at $ 22.5 billion.
