Strombosia pustulata is a tree in the Olacaceae family from Central to West Africa .

description

Strombosia pustulata grows as an evergreen tree with a small, round and dense crown up to 25–35 meters high. The trunk diameter reaches 60-100 centimeters. Slight corrugations or smaller buttress roots can occur on the trunk . The grayish-brown bark is scaly and olive-green, whitish spotty.

The simple and alternate are short-stalked leaves. The short, above runny leaf stalk is 1–2 centimeters long. The entire, glabrous and slightly leathery leaves are ovate, lanceolate to elliptical, lanceolate or obovate and acuminate, pointed to acuminate. They are about 5–20 centimeters long and a little pustular on the surface. The upper side of the leaf is matt to glossy. The nerve is pinnate with more or less distinct, mostly curved side veins. The stipules are missing.

The flowers are in axillary and little-flowered clusters. The short-stalked, hermaphrodite and fivefold, small flowers are double perianth . The small goblet has five lobes. The free, elongated and upright petals are arranged in a cup-shaped manner with recessed tips. They are greenish to white-yellowish and densely hairy on the inside in the upper half and bald outside. The stamens of the 5 stamens are fused with the petals in the lower part. The ovary is semi-protruding, the stigma is slightly lobed. There is a discus .

Roundish, single-seeded and brown-purple, up to 1–3 centimeters large drupes are formed in the constant, fleshy calyx. They have slightly recessed, round remains of disc and stylus at the tip.

Taxonomy

The first description was in 1894 by Daniel Oliver in Hooker's Icon. Pl. 23: t. 2299. A synonym is Strombosia glaucescens Engl.

There are two varieties:

  • Strombosia pustulata var. Pustulata ; with a matt upper surface and indistinct leaf veins.
  • Strombosia pustulata var. Lucida (J.Léonard) Villiers ; with a glossy upper surface and clearly distinguishable, distinct leaf veins.

use

The heavy, hard and durable wood is known as Afina , Afena , Itako or Poé . It is used for coarser applications, the heartwood is difficult to treat.

An oil can be obtained from the seeds.
