Strongyli ( Greek Στρογγύλη [ strɔŋˈgʲili ] ( f. Sg. ), 'Round') is an uninhabited Greek island in the municipality of Nisyros in the South Aegean region . It belongs to the Dodecanese archipelago .

geography

Strongyli is 6.5 km north of Nisyros and about 3 km northeast of Gyali . The island is a good 10 km from Kos and about 16 km from the Turkish mainland ( Datça Peninsula ). The steep volcanic cone rises from the sea floor at a depth of 600 m to 125 m above sea level.

geology

Strongyli is located at the eastern end of the Cycladic Arc , which also includes the volcanic islands Methana , Milos , Santorin and Nisyros. The subaeric part of the volcano consists of streams of andesitic lava. Injections are plagioclase , pyroxene and magnetite . The bottom of the central crater is covered by a layer of pumice stone up to two meters thick , which comes from the neighboring island of Gyali. The age of Strongyle can thus be estimated at at least 31,000 years. Besides the central crater at the top of the volcanic cone, there are submarine side craters on its slope.
