Stuart J. Freedman

Stuart Jay Freedman (born January 13, 1944 in Los Angeles , † November 10, 2012 in Santa Fe ) was an American experimental physicist. In addition to nuclear, atomic and particle physics, he also dealt with astrophysics.

Freedman studied physics at the University of California, Berkeley , with a bachelor's degree in 1965, a master's degree in 1967 and a doctorate in 1972. He was then an instructor and from 1975 lecturer at Princeton University . In 1976 he became an assistant professor at Stanford University . From 1982 to 1987 he was at the Argonne National Laboratory and from 1987 to 1991 professor at the University of Chicago . From 1991 he was Professor at Berkeley and Senior Physicist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory .

He played a leading role in the KamLAND experiment in Kamioka to investigate neutrino oscillations . The detector tank filled with 1000 tons of scintillation fluid is in the same mine as Kamiokande and its successor, Superkamiokande. It is designed for the observation of electron neutrinos and antineutrinos, has been operating since 2002 and with it the first clear detection of neutrino mass (oscillation) via neutrinos that were generated in a reactor. With KamLAND, geoneutrinos are also observed from the earth's core, which allow conclusions to be drawn about the heat generation in the earth's interior.

He and his group were also involved in the CUORE detector (a bolometer operated at very low temperatures ) in the Gran Sasso underground laboratory , with which the neutrino-free double beta decay in the decay of tellurium 130 is to be observed. The Cuoricino prototype was already operating there.

With John Clauser he was involved in experiments to test Bell's inequality .

In 2007 he received the Tom W. Bonner Prize for Nuclear Physics for his contributions to neutrino physics and weak interaction, in particular for his leading role in the KamLAND experiment and his precision measurements of the beta decay of the neutron .

He was a fellow of the American Physical Society and chaired its nuclear physics division. From 1978 to 1982 he was a Sloan Research Fellow . In 2001 he was elected member of the National Academy of Sciences , in 2006 of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

He had been married since 1968 and had a son.
