Stuart M. Reed

Stuart Marshall Reed (born on 24. July 1925 in Howell ( Michigan ), died on 26. January 2012 in Audubon ( Pennsylvania )) was an American manager in the auto industry and in rail transport. He was President and Chief Operating Officer of the state-owned railway company Conrail .

Life

Stuart M. Reed was the son of Charles and Ora Woodin. He had two other siblings. From December 1, 1944 to August 1946, Stuart M. Reed served as a soldier in the Army Signal Corps . He then studied at the University of Michigan and received his bachelor's degree in engineering in 1949 and his master's degree in business administration in 1950.

Act

From 1950 Reed began working for the Ford Motor Company in Dearborn . Initially he was a trainee and later responsible for quality control. From 1959 to 1961 he worked for Cummins Engine and then moved to Columbus Process Co, Inc. for two years.

From 1963 he worked for the American Motors Corporation (AMC). From 1965 he was responsible for the production of air conditioning systems in Grand Rapids . In 1966 he became factory manager of the body shop in Milwaukee . In 1968 he became the vice president responsible for production and in 1975 he took over responsibility for the operational business. But in 1977 he was responsible for the operational area of ​​the entire group and was part of the four-person executive board of the company.

After Richard D. Spence resigned , Conrail was looking for a successor to the position of President ( Chief Operating Officer ). On February 14, 1979, it was announced that Reed would take over the position. Together with L. Stanley Crane , he managed to bring the loss-making state-owned railway company back into profitability.

Since he was not available as the successor to L. Stanley Crane as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the railway company, he ended his position on December 31, 1987.

He was married to Joann Irene Utley since 1949.

The couple had four children. Stuart M. Reed died of Alzheimer's .
