Richard D. Spence

Richard Dee Spence (born April 7, 1925 in Tucumcari , New Mexico ; died April 7, 2015 in Ponte Vedra Beach , Florida ) was an American railroad manager. He was the second president of Conrail and president of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad .

Life

Richard Dee Spence was one of the five children of Andrew Doak Spence and Myrtle Hannah Roach. He was a soldier in the US Navy from 1943 to 1946 , during which time he attended the Officers Training Program at Princeton University . He received his bachelor's degree from the University of California in Los Angeles in 1949 . He also completed a management program at Stanford University in 1956 and a management seminar at MIT in 1962 .

As early as 1946 he began to work for Southern Pacific Transportation . At first he worked as a brakeman and worked his way up. From 1967 he was assistant to the vice president for operations. In 1969 he took over the position of the vice-president responsible for operations. On September 26, 1975 he became President ( Chief Operating Officer ) of the state railway company Conrail . He held this position until June 26, 1978. He did not succeed in decisively improving the economic result of this rescue company, so that the supervisory board forced his replacement.

On September 18, 1978, he became President of the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad (SCL) controlled Louisville and Nashville Railroad . The railway company was plagued by accidents at the time and Spence was supposed to remedy the situation by improving operational processes. From 1980 to 1984 he was Executive Vice President of Operations ( Chief Operating Officer ) for the Family Lines Rail System (L&N, SCL, Clinchfield ). He then worked as a consultant in the rail transport sector until 1990.

From 1986 to 1997 he was director of a paper company in Scunthorpe (England).

Richard D. Spence was married twice. His first marriage to Jeanette Williams has two children and his second marriage to Mary Ames has three children.
