Student Peace Prize

The Student Peace Prize is awarded every other year to a student or student organization who has made a significant contribution to peace and the promotion of human rights. The prize is awarded on behalf of all Norwegian students by the Student Peace Prize Secretariat in Trondheim , Norway , which has a national nomination committee made up of representatives from Norwegian universities as well as an independent Peace Prize committee that awards the prize. The award ceremony takes place during the International Student Festival in Trondheim ( ISFiT ).

The committee

In 2010 the Peace Prize Committee consisted of nine members; four representatives from the National Union of Students in Norway (NSO), one representative from the Students 'and Academics' International Assistance Fund (SAIH), and four non-student members.

Members of the committee in 2011 include Ole Danbolt Mjøs , former chairman of the Nobel Peace Prize Committee, Børge Brende , former minister of economics and current managing director of the Red Cross in Norway, and the district and news spokeswoman for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK), Large spar .

Former committee members included a. the former Prime Minister and head of the Oslo Center for Peace and Human Rights Kjell Magne Bondevik , the head of the Norwegian Institute for International Affairs, Jan Egeland , the former head of the International Peace Research Institute in Oslo (PRIO), Stein Tønnesson , and the former Foreign Minister and Managing Director of the Red Cross in Norway, Thorvald Stoltenberg .

Nominations

The nomination council accepts nominations from all interested parties. The nominees must be either students or a student organization. The nomination board consists of students from various Norwegian universities.

The price

In 2009 the winner received prize money of 50,000 NOK (approx. € 5,000) and an invitation to the award ceremony at the International Student Festival in Trondheim (ISFiT). The award winner or a selected substitute will go on a tour of Norway, during which they will meet human rights organizations and prominent politicians in selected cities.
