The dorland advertising agency originated in 1883 in Atlantic City , USA. John M. Dorland founded the dorland Advertising Agency with the business idea of placing advertisements for local hoteliers in order to attract tourists.
After his death, Walter E. Edge took over the agency. With economic success, the dorland Advertising Agency expanded to Europe. In 1928 Walter S. Maas founded a German office on Kurfürstendamm in Berlin.
history
In 1928, the then Turkish art director Mehemed F. Aghaden brought the then well-known Bauhaus designer Herbert Bayer into the house. His lasting style- defining design language quickly found its way into the everyday world of Germans via the dorland studio . During National Socialism, the dorland studios worked under Bayer for NS clients. After Bayer's works were represented in the Nazi exhibition Degenerate Art in Munich in 1937 , Bayer emigrated to the USA in 1938; Richard Roth became his successor.
Stefan Hansen has been a managing partner at dorland since 1989. After internationalization, he managed 19 dorland branches in 17 European countries from 1995 to 2007 under the umbrella of the Gray Global Group / WPP .
At the beginning of the 1990s, dorland took on a pioneering role in the liberalization of the energy markets with customers such as BEWAG / Vattenfall , EnBW and GASAG and promoted the development of the mobile communications market with e-plus service .
Other customers included Honda , Procter & Gamble , Volvo , BMW Eastern Europe and Lufthansa .
Under the leadership of CCO Fritz Hendrick Melle, the image campaigns “Not for everybody” for Bruno Banani and “Berlin, you are so wonderful” for Berliner Pilsner were created .
Dorland is particularly committed to the Bauhaus theme . In 2008, partner Stefan Hansen handed over the dorland archive, the largest coherent collection of advertising graphics created by Bauhaus artists from the 1920s to the 1970s, to the Bauhaus archive (Museum of Design) in Berlin, of which he is deputy chairman of the board.
In 2014, Dorland was bought back from the Gray Group by Private Pier Industries, the holding company owned by Stefan Hansen and Hendrick Melle.
