Ziggelplatz

Stufels is the oldest district in the municipality of Brixen in the South Tyrolean Eisack Valley in Italy .

geography

Stufels is located in the Brixen valley basin . The district occupies the gusset of the Eisack and Rienz estuaries , directly opposite the old town on the other side of the Eisack.

history

Guardian Angel Church

Stufels was already settled before the first mention of Brixen 901 since the Hallstatt period. The place was named in a document in the 12th century. The then and still important traffic route across the Alps led to early settlements in Stufels. Tools and vessels from this time have been found there. In ancient times , the place gained its importance as a strategic base thanks to its location on the Brenner axis . The settlement activity was strengthened by the construction of the Via Claudia Augusta by the Romans. As a result, Stufels was on one of the most important military roads of the Roman Empire. Excavations show that the Romans ran farmsteads and probably a street station around Stufels for centuries. The name of the Roman settlement is so far unknown. Numerous coin and bone finds confirm its importance as a late antique-early medieval settlement.

architecture

Lower Schutzengelgasse

The architecture of Stufel goes back far into the Middle Ages . The age and the architectural peculiarities are the reason why Stufels is almost entirely under monument protection (see list of architectural monuments in Bressanone ).
