Mute was a sludge and drone doom band founded in Turku in 2003 , which disbanded in 2010.

history

Heikki Jytilä, Helena Hiltunen and Jukka Mattila founded Stumm in the fall of 2003, according to the press release, to "play slow, primitive and hateful sludge." The members of the group were introduced to each other by Earl of Void from Reverend Bizarre after Mattila spoke about the wish had spoken to start a band.

After two demo releases , which were made in the rehearsal room and when the group performed, as well as a few concerts, mainly in Turku and the surrounding area, Stumm won a contract with the British label Aesthetic Death Records , for which the group recorded an album. The contact with Aesthetic Death came about while Stumm appeared in the opening act for Esoteric . Mattila gave the label owner Stu Gregg, who sold merchandising items during the concert, one of the demo recordings, whereupon Gregg later expressed interest in a release of the group. The debut album I was recorded within two days in 2005 and mastered by James Plotkin ( OLD , Lotus Eaters , Khanate ). It was released internationally as a CD on Aesthetic Death and as a limited record on Blind Date Records in February 2006. In the years that followed, Stumm performed frequently in Finland and occasionally in surrounding countries. As the official releases the debut followed in 2007 two split - EPs , with Loinen for cult of Nihilow well as Taunt for Calculon Records . After seven active years, the group separated in 2010. Mainly singer and guitarist Jukka Mattila remained musically active with the groups Throat and AM beyond Stumm's existence . After the group ended, the Finnish label Kaos Kontrol released a cassette collection limited to 100 copies in 2014 with all the group's existing recordings that did not appear on I under the title Stumm is Dead .

style

The style of the group is mainly described as a mixture of Sludge and Drone Doom. Hardcore punk , crustcore , grindcore , post-hardcore , doom metal , black metal , death metal , death industrial and power electronics are named as further influences by the band and by reviewers .

The music is described as heavy, slow metal with a lot of feedback. The band is occasionally compared to the groups Grief , Corrupted and Noothgrush . Mattila gives a reference to these groups and the opportunity to hear their influence in the riffing . Playing the drums is described as particularly difficult, while the singing is described as a tormented and painful roar .
