The broadleaf Mannsschild ( Androsace obtusifolia ) is a species of the genus Mannsschild ( Androsace ) in the family of Primrose (Primulaceae).

features

The stump-leaved man's shield is a perennial plant that reaches heights of up to 10 centimeters. It is densely covered with very short star or fork hairs. Foliage leaves and bracts usually only have cilia on the edge. The leaves are arranged in single or slightly spread rosettes. They are 6 to 25 millimeters long, up to 4 millimeters wide, lanceolate and have a blunt tip.

From the leaf axils arise up to 10 centimeters long stems with multi-flowered umbels. The flower stalks are 2 to 15 millimeters long and usually significantly longer than the narrow-lanceolate bracts. The calyx is 3 to 4 millimeters long and divided up to the middle. The crown is 6 to 9 millimeters wide and mostly colored white, the throat is yellowish and the lobes are round.

The flowering period extends from June to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 36 or 38.

Occurrence

The blunt-leaved man's shield occurs in the Alps (mainly in silicate areas), in the Apennines, the Sudetes, the Carpathian Mountains and in the Balkans. This species grows on lime-poor soils at altitudes of 1500 to 3500 meters.

Locations and distribution in Central Europe

The stump-leaved man's shield needs lime-poor or lime-free, humus-rich soil.

It colonizes gappy alpine lawns and prefers heights between about 1500 to 3500 m. It is a character species of the Caricion curvulae association, but is rarely found in high-montane Nardion societies.

The blunt-leaved man's shield occurs sporadically in the Northern Limestone Alps, scattered in the Central Alps, rarely in the Western and Southern Alps.
