Šturmai ( German  storms ) is a small village in the Lithuanian district of Klaipėda (Memel) . It belongs to the administrative district (Seniūnija) of the town (Miestelis) Kintai (Kinten) within the Rajongemeinde Šilutė (Heydekrug) .

Geographical location

Šturmai is located on the east bank of the Curonian Lagoon (Lithuanian: Kuršių marios) and is 24 kilometers from Šilutė and eight kilometers from Kintai . The side road 2201 runs through the village and ends at the Windenburger Eck (Ventės ragas). The closest train station is Šilutė on the Tilsit – Memel railway line (Tilžė – Klaipėda).

history

The village, named after its founder Jacob Sturm , was founded before 1540 . Before 1730 the place was called Philipp Dautsch , probably after its owner , and in 1785 the then Philipdautsch came to the office of Ruß (Lithuanian: Rusnė).

In 1874 which has now TOWERS -called village in the newly built office district Kinten (Lithuanian: Kintai) incorporated, which until 1922 and the second from 1939 to 1945 county Heydekrug in Administrative district Gumbinnen the Prussian province of East Prussia belonged. In 1910 Sturmen had 91 inhabitants. Between 1923 and 1939 Memelland was part of the Republic of Lithuania and then German again for six years. On May 1, 1939, Sturmen merged with the neighboring community of Windenburg (Lithuanian: Ventė) to form the new community of Windenburg.

After belonging to the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic , the village is located since 1990 in the newly formed Republic of Lithuania and within the County Klaipeda in the šilutė district municipality incorporated.

Before 1945, the majority of the population of Sturmens was Protestant . The village was part of the parish of the Kinten church, which belonged to the Heydekrug church district in the church province of East Prussia - between 1923 and 1939 with its own consistory for the Memelland - the church of the Old Prussian Union . Even today, the Protestant residents of Šturmais have a relationship with the church in Kintai within the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lithuania , even if they now live within a predominantly Catholic population.
