Megaron Temple in Romanzesu

Romanzesu is an unusual nuragic settlement of around seven hectares , popularly known as the "Place of the Witches ", the largest of its kind in Sardinia . It is located on the granite plateau near Bitti in the province of Nuoro .

The nuragic culture surprises with the unusual complexity of the architecture , only 20% of which has been excavated. It is certain that the water cult played an important role. The longest river on the island, the 150 km long Tirso, rises not far from the place of worship . Therefore it is believed that the heart of the ruined city is the well sanctuary Poddi Arvu. The well was partially buried in the 1920s. The place of worship, which is unique in its shape in Sardinia, stretches from the source over 42 m downhill and ends in a small amphitheater. On the way, the watercourse is bordered by steps. The place of worship is in the 13th century BC. Dated. In addition to the Poddi Arvu spring, there are other sacred buildings between the cork oaks . Only a few meters from the fountain sanctuary are the remains of a megaron temple . Only 20 of these rectangular temples with thick stone walls have been discovered across the island, three of them in Romanzesu. The best preserved and largest is dated to the 14th century BC. Dated and has been rebuilt and expanded several times over the centuries.

The heart of the ruined city is the well sanctuary ( Italian Pozzo sacro ) Poddi Arvu . You won't find the well today, because in the 1920s farm workers in search of water on the high plateau north of Bitti partially buried and diverted the old spring. A stone staircase over which the water from the spring gushed into the well sanctuary was destroyed. The water cult site, which cannot be found anywhere else in its form in Sardinia, stretches downhill from the spring over 42 meters and ends in a small amphitheater. On its narrow path, the course of the spring is bordered by steps. On the north side are two small Baityloi (ital. Betili ) and on the south side, a third of granite been found.

In addition to the Poddi Arvu spring, there are other sacred buildings between the cork oaks. The remains of a megaron temple are only a few meters away from the fountain sanctuary. Only 20 of the rare, rectangular cult temples with thick stone walls have been discovered across the island, three of them in Romanzesu alone. The best preserved and largest is dated to the 14th century BC. Dated and rebuilt and expanded several times over the centuries. The largest find of amber from the Baltic States to be discovered in Sardinia was also discovered here. There are also numerous horse bones, ceramic shards, and bronze objects.

The temples and fountain sanctuaries are not the only sacred buildings in Romanzesu. There are:

  • numerous steles,
  • a temple with concentric walls,
  • various foundations of round buildings.

The large round buildings with a central point inside were probably assembly halls. Six were found in Romanzesu.
