Subir Sachdev

Subir Sachdev (born December 2, 1961 in New Delhi ) is an Indian-American physicist who deals with theoretical solid-state physics. He is a professor at Harvard University .

Sachdev graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in 1982 and from Harvard University with a master's degree in physics in 1984 and a PhD in 1985. He was a post-doctoral student at Bell Laboratories . In 1987 he became Assistant Professor, 1989 Associate Professor and 1995 Professor at Yale University . From 2005 he was a professor at Harvard. He is also a research professor at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics .

He deals with quantum phase transitions , about which he wrote a monograph, with applications, for example, to high-temperature superconductors (HTS). Around 2010 he was involved in showing the connection between d-wave charge density waves ( i.e. corresponding orbital angular momentum 2) in high-temperature superconductors and superconductivity, which are rival collective states in these materials. Sachdev suspects the antiferromagnetism of the material as the common cause and showed that this leads to d-wave-shaped charge density waves for electron-hole pairs ( d-wave Cooper pairs of electrons have long been assumed as the basis for HTS in cuprates ).

Sachdev is a pioneer in the application of concepts of string theory and the quantum theory of black holes ( AdS / CFT correspondence ) to quantum phase transitions in solid-state physics, for example in the Boson-Hubbard model in two spatial dimensions and its insulator-superconductor transition (a system, which cannot be described with quasiparticles).

In 2001 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society , which awarded him its Lars Onsager Prize for 2018 . In 2003/04 he was a Guggenheim Fellow and in 1989 a Sloan Research Fellow . In 2014 he became a member of the National Academy of Sciences . In 2015 he received the Dirac Medal from the University of New South Wales (UNSW). For 2018 he was awarded the Dirac Medal (ICTP) . In 2019 Sachdev was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
