“Summ, summ, summ” is one of the most popular German children's songs. August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben wrote the text in 1835 under the original title Bee . It was published in Leipzig in 1843 in Hoffmann's collection of songs, Funfzig Kinderlieder published by the “Verlag von Mayer und Wigand”, and in his collection of poems in the Weidmann bookshop .

The text is remotely based on the Lorsch bee blessing from the 10th century. The melody of the song follows a folk tune from Bohemia , which is said to have been recorded for the first time in 1825. It comprises 12 bars per stanza and is in 2/4 time. In the first edition provided with piano accompaniment by Ernst Heinrich Leopold Richter , it is in G major . An alternative melody that bears no resemblance to the folk song was composed by Carl Reinecke in 1875 under the title An die Biene as No. 4 of his Eight Children's Songs with Easy Piano and Violin Accompaniment, Op. 138.The American composer Otto Dresel (1826 –1890) composed a version for vocal duet and piano in 1847.

text

Hum hum hum!
Bees are buzzing around!
egg! we won't harm you,
fly now into the forest and heather!
Hum hum hum!
Bees are buzzing around!

Hum hum hum!
Bees are buzzing around!
search in flowers,
look for a droplet in flowers, a crumb!
Hum hum hum!
Bees are buzzing around!

Hum hum hum!
Bees are buzzing around!
return home with rich possessions,
build many a honeycomb for us!
Hum hum hum!
Bees are buzzing around!

Hum hum hum!
Bees are buzzing around!
With the holy Christ gifts
we want to remember you too -
humming hum!
Bees are buzzing around!

Hum hum hum!
Bees are buzzing around!
when we look for
pepper nuts and honey cakes with the wax stick .
Hum hum hum!
Bees are buzzing around!
