Sun Yirang (1848-1908)

Sun Yirang ( Chinese  孫詒讓  /  孙诒让 , W.-G. Sun I-jang ; 1848 - 1908 ) was a Confucian scholar and an important Chinese scholar of the late Qing Dynasty .

Life

Sun Yirang is a native of Rui'an ( Wenzhou ) in Zhejiang Province . After only a short career, he left his civil service to devote himself entirely to his studies. His most important works are Mozi jiangu (墨子 間 詁, see also Zhuzi jicheng ), a final and corrected edition of the Mozi (Master Mo), and the Zhouli zhengyi (周禮 正義), an important commentary on the rites of the Zhou (Zhouli ). He also contributed to the study of bronze inscriptions and oracle bone script . His work Qiwen juli (契文 舉例), published posthumously by Luo Zhenyu , is considered the first work in which the oracle bone inscriptions were deciphered.

Sun Yirang has only sporadically uttered his ideas in Zhayi (see e.g. Zhuangzi zhayi庄子 札 wie) such as Wang Niansun , Yu Yue or Ma Xulun .
