The Sunbeam 1000 HP Mystery , also called The Slug 'Snail' , is a racing car that was built by Sunbeam in Wolverhampton , England to set a land speed record. It was the first four-wheeled motor vehicle to go over 200 mph.
technology
The car was of two successively arranged twelve-cylinder - aircraft engines driven each with 450 hp, wherein an engine before, the other behind the cockpit was arranged. Although the actual performance of the car was only 900 hp, probably liked the directors of Sunbeam, the term with 1,000 HP better. The fuel consumption was over 18 l / min. The gearbox had only three gear ratios, which corresponded to driving speeds of 147 km / h, 250 km / h and 385 km / h. The power was transmitted to the wheels via cardan shafts and chains .
Record attempt
The car was driven by racing driver Henry Segrave . He reckoned with 3.5 km of approach and 6.5 km of exit, so the entire track had to be about 15 km long. There was no suitable location in Europe for the record attempt, which is why the car was shipped to Jacksonville , Florida in the United States . The record attempt was to be carried out on the racetrack along the sandy beach in Daytona Beach . The first drive hit 176 mph (283.25 km / h), but then the shift fork jammed in the transmission , which required four days of repairs to fix the damage. The record attempt was to be made on March 29, 1927. There were 30,000 spectators on the adjacent sand dunes . On the first trip, the 200 mph were again not reached. The wind caused problems and the tires were changed. The two official trips reached 200.668 and 207.015 mph, which averaged the official one-mile speed record of 203.79 mph (327.97 km / h).
Whereabouts
The car is owned by the National Motor Museum Trust and is on display at the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu , England .
