Sunderold OSB († June 26, 891 ) was Archbishop of Mainz and Archchancellor of the Franconian Empire from 889 until his death.

Sunderold was abbot of the Fulda monastery . After the death of Liutbert (889), the Margrave of the Sorbian Mark Poppo of Thuringia recommended him to the King of Eastern Franconia Arnulf of Carinthia and so he became Archbishop of Mainz and Arch Chancellor of the Franconian Empire .

In the course of the decline of the Frankish Empire in the second half of the 9th century, invading Viking hordes in 891 stormed the imperial troops led by Sunderold on the Geule , not far from Maastricht . They defeated the Franks . During this battle Archbishop Sunderold was killed along with another military leader.

He was transferred to the St. Alban Abbey near Mainz and buried. The day of his death is listed in old diocesan calendars as his day of remembrance.
