Susan Reed (born January 11, 1926 in Columbia , South Carolina , † April 25, 2010 in Greenport, Long Island ) was an American folk singer .

Susan Reed grew up in South Carolina, California and New York as the daughter of talent agent Isadora Bennett and actor Daniel Reed, her godfather was film legend Buster Keaton . She became known in the American folk scene in the 1940s; she sang Irish folk songs , accompanying herself on the zither , harp and accord zither .

Through her father Daniel Reed, an entertainer, actor, theater director and author, she came into contact with artists such as Carl Sandburg and Leadbelly at an early age . Her particular interest in Irish folk music was awakened by guest performances by the Abbey Theater Company from Dublin; She made her debut in New York's Town Hall in 1946 at the age of 19 singing for disabled soldiers. In 1947 she was praised by the author Alan Lomax when he placed her in the New York Times in a row with artists such as Burl Ives , Josh White and Woody Guthrie . She had a film appearance in the role of the folk singer Jennie Higgins in the B-film Glamor Girl , at the side of Gene Krupa and his orchestra.

In the post-war period she was part of the American folk scene; At the end of the 1950s it was gradually forgotten; she lived in Nyack , where she had a handicraft shop. However, her style became the model for that of the British folk revival when Shirley Collins saw her in the cinema in 1948 and adopted her singing style.
