Susan Frances Mary Williams, Baroness Williams of Trafford (* 16th May 1967 ) is a British politician of the Conservative Party . Since September 2013 she has been a Life Peer member of the House of Lords .

Life

Williams was born as Susan Fildes. From 1978 to 1985 she attended La Sagesse High School, a Roman Catholic private school , in Jesmond , a suburb of Newcastle upon Tyne . From 1987 to 1991 she studied at the University of Huddersfield , where she obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. Hons) in nutritional science ( Applied Nutrition ).

Williams has been politically active for the Conservative Party since the late 1990s. She began her political career in local politics . In May 1998 she was elected for the Conservative Party as a councilor (Councilor) in the Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council , the city council of Trafford ; there she represented the constituency of Altrincham Ward . Since 2002 she has been chairwoman of the Conservative Party in the Trafford constituency. From 2004 to 2009 she was chairman (leader) of the Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council. In this role she was responsible for the strategic policy direction of Trafford Council. In March 2011, she resigned from the Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council.

During her political tenure at Trafford Council, she served on several regional bodies and committees. She was a member of the Greater Manchester Police Authority (May 2008 to May 2009) and a Board Member of the Central Salford Urban Regeneration Company (June 2008 to April 2010). From December 2007 to December 2011 she was a member of the supervisory board (non-executive director) of the North West Development Agency. From April 2006 to April 2012 she also worked as a leadership consultant in the Local Government Improvement and Development Agency (LGID). There she supported and advised local politicians in the execution of their tasks in the areas of finance , cooperation , leadership and management as well as in social affairs in the area of care services and care for the elderly. From April 2011 to September 2012, she was also Chair of the North West District (North West Chairman) of the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of national cultural heritage .

Since January 2011 she has been Director of the non-profit organization North West Rail Campaign ; the organization is committed to investments in the rail transport sector in the north-west of Great Britain , in particular through networking , referrals and contacts . Since May 2012 she has been Executive Director of Atlantic Gateway , a strategic investment project in the north-west of England, in the corridor between Greater Manchester and Merseyside . The project also includes the rehabilitation of the port of Liverpool and the Manchester Ship Canal .

In the British general election in 2001 , she ran unsuccessfully for the Conservative Party in the constituency of Wythenshawe and Sale East , then under her maiden name Susan Fildes . In the British general election in 2010 , she ran again for the Conservative Party in the constituency of Bolton West for a seat in the British House of Commons and just lost.

On August 1, 2013, it was announced that Williams will be named a Life Peer and a member of the House of Lords for the Conservative Party. She was appointed as a so-called “working peer”. On September 20, 2013, she was formally promoted to Life Peer; she bears the title Baroness Williams of Trafford , of Hale in the County of Greater Manchester. She has also formally belonged to the House of Lords since September 20, 2013. On November 5, 2013, it was officially introduced to the House of Lords with the assistance of Patricia Morris, Baroness Morris of Bolton and Michael Howard, Baron Howard of Lympne . Her areas of political interest include in particular education policy and health policy .
