Susanne Ebbinghaus
Susanne Ebbinghaus (born June 25, 1969 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German classical archaeologist .
Susanne Ebbinghaus studied Classical Archeology, Ancient History and Early Christian and Byzantine Art History at the University of Freiburg . In 1991 she moved to the University of Oxford , where she obtained her master's degree in 1993 for her studies in Classical and Near Eastern Art and Archeology and received her doctorate in 1998 with John Boardman .
For 1999/2000 she was awarded the travel grant of the German Archaeological Institute , which she did not accept. She then worked for the Lexicon Iconographicum Mythologiae Classicae in Basel and the Antiquities Department of the J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu. Since 2006, Ebbinghaus has succeeded David Gordon Mitten as head of the Department of Antiquities ( George MA Hanfmann Curator of Ancient Art ) at the Arthur M. Sackler Museum at Harvard University , where she also teaches classical archeology at the Department of the Classics .
Ebbinghaus deals scientifically with the cultural exchange between Greece and the Middle East in the first millennium BC, in particular with the influence of the Middle East on the island of Samos in the archaic period . She researches rhyta and animal-shaped vases in the Achaemenid Empire , ancient polychromy , metal manufacturing techniques and the importance of the exchange of gifts.
