biography

Chaffee learned to ski at the age of three from her mother, who was a successful ski racer herself in the 1940s. At the age of 19, she achieved 4th place in the downhill at the 1966 Alpine World Ski Championships in Portillo . Despite a serious fall in Vail after which she had to end the season , she finished the Alpine Ski World Cup in 1967 in 10th place among downhill skiers and 16th in the overall ranking of women. As captain of the US women's team, she disappointed with 28th place in the downhill race at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble . Nevertheless, at the end of her sporting career, she made a lasting impression in her skin-tight silver racing suit. Later (1971–1973) she won three world championship titles in freestyle skiing and, in particular, had a decisive influence on the ballet discipline . In 1988 she was inducted into the US National Ski Hall of Fame .

After several engagements in commercials for the US market ( Chapstick , Revlon , Danone , Seagram ), she worked in films such as Ski Lift to Death and Feuer und Eis (1986; director: Willy Bogner junior ).

Chaffee was politically active in the United States for equal rights for girls in school sports and was the first woman to serve on the United States National Olympic Committee and a member of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition under four US presidents .

Chaffee comes from a family that is very interested in skiing: her brother Rick also competed in alpine ski racing at the 1968 Winter Olympics. Her cousin Jonathan was a biathlete and, together with his sister Kim, also a ski racer for Harvard University .
