The Svarthamaren ( Norwegian for Black Hammer ) is a striking and ice-free mountain in Queen Maud Land, East Antarctica . It rises in the Mühlig-Hofmann Mountains east of the mouth of the Vestre Skorvebreen and is around 200 km inland from the Princess Astrid Coast . The mountain is the largest breeding area for the Antarctic petrel with up to 180,000 breeding pairs. The Norwegian research station Tor, which is only manned in summer, has been located at the foot of the mountain since 1993 .
Norwegian cartographers, who also named it, carried out a mapping based on aerial photographs and measurements of the Third Norwegian Antarctic Expedition (1956–1960).
