Sven Olaf Hoffmann

Sven Olaf Hoffmann (born July 19, 1939 in Hamburg ) is a German professor emeritus of psychosomatics , psychotherapy and psychologist .

Life

Sven Olaf Hoffmann studied psychology and medicine . He received his doctorate in medicine in Hamburg in 1964 and completed his habilitation in 1977 at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg . Three years later he was appointed associate professor there in 1980. From 1982 to 2004 Hoffmann was director of the clinic and polyclinic for psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy at the University of Mainz .

Hoffmann was chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board on Psychotherapy from 1998 to 2003 (together with Jürgen Margraf ). From 2004 to 2012 he was a member of the supervisory board of Greenpeace Germany.

Hoffmann has a psychoanalytic training, but was mainly active as a representative of psychodynamic psychotherapy.

Areas of work and main interests

In the systematic area, Hoffmann deals with questions of nosology and personality disorders, operationalization of psychodynamic diagnostics. In the clinical area, his research related to sleep disorders, chronic pain, the consequences of infantile trauma and anxiety disorders. He conducts therapeutic research on questions of inpatient psychotherapy and low-frequency outpatient long-term therapy.
