Svend Erik Tarp

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Svend Erik Tarp (born August 6, 1908 in Thisted , Denmark , † October 19, 1994 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish composer .

Life

Growing up in Kolding , he studied at the University of Copenhagen with Elof Nielsen until 1930 and graduated from the Royal Danish Conservatory in 1932 as a student of Knud Jeppesen and Rudolph Simonsen. After studying in Germany, Austria and Holland, he taught from 1936 to 1947 in Copenhagen at the Opera Academy , the Conservatory, the Pedagogical College and the University. From 1941 to 1960 he worked for the publishing house Samfundet til Udgivelse af Dansk Musik (Society for the Edition of Danish Music). Among other things, he worked for the Koda , the society for performing rights of Danish musicians, of which he was director from 1961 to 1974. At times he also worked as a consultant for the Danish radio .

In contrast to Danish composers of his generation such as Herman D. Koppel and Vagn Holmboe , Tarp's oeuvre fell into oblivion after his death. He left behind two operas, two ballets, ten symphonies (1945–1992), concerts, overtures, songs, choir, chamber, piano and film music. French music, the Les Six group and neoclassicism were initially influential to him . But there are also influences from Bartók , Stravinsky , Prokofiev and Shostakovich . In contrast to the light, elegant early work, his later compositions from around 1950 are increasingly characterized by a more serious tone and strong expressiveness.
