Sverker John Olof Göranson (born May 3, 1954 in Lund ) is a Swedish general and was Commander in Chief of the Swedish Armed Forces from March 25, 2009 to September 30, 2015 .

Life

Göranson completed his school education in 1973 with a high school diploma and studied education , psychology and sociology until 1974 . In 1975 he joined the Swedish armed forces.

After completing the officer course, Göranson was promoted to lieutenant in 1977 . He served in the armored forces ( Stridsvagn ) and was there, among other things, operations chief and brigade commander (1997-2000). In 1995 and 1996 Göranson was chief of staff of the UNPROFOR contingent in Bosnia during the Yugoslav wars and later deputy commander of the Swedish IFOR forces. From 2000 to 2003, Sverker Göranson served as a military attaché at the Swedish Embassy in Washington , USA .

In 2003 Göranson was promoted to brigadier general. Until 2005 he was Chief of the Planning Staff of the Swedish Armed Forces. Then he was promoted to major general and army inspector , comparable to the inspector of the army of the Bundeswehr . Before being appointed Commander-in-Chief, he was Chief of the Armed Forces Command Staff until 2009. On October 1, 2015, Micael Bydén succeeded him as Commander-in-Chief.

Private

Göranson is married and has two children (* 1983 and * 1985). He speaks English and German .
