Red Garland

Swingin 'on the Korner: Live at Keystone Korner is an album by Red Garland . It was created in trio with bassist Leroy Vinnegar and drummer Philly Joe Jones during a performance on December 6, 1977 at the Keystone Korner jazz club in San Francisco. The previously unpublished recordings were released on December 20, 2014 by Elemental Music.

background

After the release of When Skies Are Gray (Prestige, 1963), it would be nine years before Red Garland released another record, The Quota ( MPS , 1971). The rock music was jazz replaced as America's popular music and jazz style Garlands had lost its former popularity. The San Francisco gig was the only time Vinnegar and Jones formed a trio with Garland. The 2-CD set (which was also available as a download and 3-LP set) is supplemented by a 44-page booklet containing new articles, interviews and essays by Nat Hentoff , Ira Gitler , Don Schlitten , Doug Ramsey , Benny Green , Kenny Washington, and the producer team Zev Feldman and Todd Barkan. In addition, there are previously unpublished photographs of the musicians, taken by Keystone in-house photographer Tom Copi.

reception

Matt R. Lohr said in JazzTimes that when discussing the great pianists of jazz , Red Garland is usually mentioned late in the conversation, if at all. Despite his central role in the first great Miles Davis quintet, his work with John Coltrane and his successful career as a trio leader, Garland's star has declined considerably since his death in 1984. Swingin 'on the Korner shows, however, that Garland deserves a bigger place in the pantheon. The three musicians are “in excellent shape when they work out a program of pop and jazz standards . Garland combined clinking Erroll Garner - block chord . With moments of individual tones as in, I Wish I Knew ', and his flair for melodic space gives the obscure ballad, If I Have Luck' a melancholy pain "Jones' snare bombs and hiss The Cymbals advance solo in Garland's heavy swing version of ' Bags' Groove ' and ' Dear Old Stockholm '; they “thunder without losing the beat. Vinnegar proves himself to be a master of walking in 'The best Things in Life Are Free', and he gives ' On Green Dolphin Street ' a solid foundation while Garland coaxes the fire out of one of the most seductive melodies in jazz. "

The music collected here ignores the changes in jazz since Garland's days with Miles Davis, says Lohr. “If you said these recordings were made in 1957 instead of 20 years later, you would not blink an eyelash. But when musicians master even the most popular standards with so much skill and harmonic synchronicity, magic can arise, and swingin 'on the Korner is as deeply pleasurable as it is for restoring Garland's legacy. "

Michael Bailey wrote in All About Jazz , William "Red" Garland had on a number of recordings from 1955 to 1962 Mainstream - Jazz Piano defined, both as a leader and as a sideman. “His easy swinging, mastery of the blues and his free use of block chords, which became a trademark of Garland, were easily recognizable . The pianist anchored a piano trio with bassist Paul Chambers and drummers Philly Joe Jones and Art Taylor , who represented the epitome of jazz. "Garland's empathy with his bandmates is evident in his relaxed and confident interpretation during the two hours of documented music. Garland has this style under control in the ballads “ Love for Sale ”, “ On Green Dolphin Street ” or “ Autumn Leaves ”. He doesn't play conspicuously, but he always finds Charlie Parker's "nice notes". Jones' drumming in the ballads is "full of soft flames and Vinnegars bass playing is appropriately reserved." What the trio is passionate about is the blues, says the author. Vinnegar is said to be the genius of walking bass, which can direct the pace and momentum like a catcher at the World Series . 'Blues in Bebop', ' Straight, No Chaser ' and 'Bag's Groove' begin with a high boil that turns into a full simmer. The sound quality of the performance is better than expected, Vinnegars bass is clearly ahead of Garland's piano. Jones plays with that fire that Miles Davis always admired. Red Garland has always been underrated as he has always produced music of consistently high quality and value for American discography.

Matt Collar gave the album four (out of five) stars in Allmusic and said: "This is great, swinging jazz."

In 2016, the album was nominated by the Jazz Journalists Association for the JJA Awards in the Reissue of the Year category
