Biennale of Sydney
The of Sydney Biennale is a two-yearly international art exhibition in Sydney ( Australia ).
The Sydney Biennale is an international exhibition festival that has been held in Sydney, Australia's largest city , since 1978 , at several exhibition locations. The first biennial took place in the newly inaugurated Sydney Opera House with 36 participating artists. Since then, the exhibition program has been supplemented with performances, symposia, workshops and discussion events. Over 1500 artistic positions from 60 countries have been shown at the sixteen biennials that have taken place so far.
Thematically, the biennials had some focal points that dealt primarily with the country's cultural orientation. The 1976 and 1979 events showed the cultural and ethnic diversity of Australia, 1973 and 1976 the arts of Asia and the Pacific, and 1979, 1982 and 1984 the social changes in Australian society.
The 14th Biennale of Sydney 2004 took place from June 4th to August 15th under the theme On Reason and Emotion in the major museums, the main gallery, the Royal Botanic Gardens and in front of the Opera House, curator was Isabel Carlos. The 15th Biennale 2006, entitled Zones of Contact , lasted from June 8th to August 27th. 85 artists from 44 countries took part. The setting was sixteen different locations in the city, including the major museums and galleries and Pier 2/3 on Walsh Bay. The festival had over 300,000 visitors, the director was Charles Merewether.
The 16th Biennale 2008 was open from June 18 to September 7 under the theme Revolutions - Forms That Turn and included works by over 80 artists from Kasimir Malewitsch and Man Ray to the present day. The exhibition venues included the Art Gallery of New South Wales , the Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney , the Sydney Opera House , various private galleries and Pier 2/3 on Walsh Bay. The artistic director was the exhibition organizer and writer Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev . The exhibited German artists included Joseph Beuys , Thomas Bayrle and Adolf Luther .
The 17th Biennale 2010 took place from May 12th to August 1st 2010 under the direction of David Eliott under the theme THE BEAUTY OF DISTANCE: Songs of Survival in a Precarious Age . The exhibition locations from 2008 were used.
The 18th Biennale 2012 under the motto all our relations took place from June 27th to September 16th. Artistic directors were Catherine de Zegher and Gerald McMaster.
The motto of the 19th Biennale 2014 is You Imagine What You Desire . The main sponsor is the Australian company Transfield Services , which has been operating camps for asylum seekers rejected by Australia on the island of Manus in Papua New Guinea and on Nauru since the beginning of 2014 . Several dozen artists canceled their participation in the biennale in protest against the sponsor.
The Australian artist Brook Andrew will be Artistic Director of the 22nd Biennale in 2020. Brook has exhibited in many international museums, including a. in the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia , Madrid, in the Musée d'ethnographie de Genève Genève, Geneva, in the Musée du quai Branly , Paris and in the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven.
