history

The Bruttiger Jews used to belong to the community in Beilstein. They also used the Jewish cemetery there . This was also maintained when the synagogue was built below the Catholic parish church of St. Margaretha in 1835 by the district architect Carl Riemann. An arched ceiling adorns the ceremonial room . The building is a slate-covered quarry stone building with large arched windows. The half-timbered gable on the street side has three round windows.

When the number of Jewish residents fell sharply due to emigration and emigration (around 50 in 1858, 22 in 1925), the synagogue was sold in 1925. The new owner used it as a wood store and set up a barrel cellar in the basement. During the Second World War, the building was partially damaged by an incendiary bomb; the actual synagogue room, however, remained intact.

Todays use

In 2003, traces of cultic use were documented during a student building survey . The ritual bath ( mikveh ), which was excavated until 2005, was rediscovered in the cellar . The secular synagogue was acquired by the municipality of Bruttig-Fankel and extensively restored. The building is used for cultural events.
