Synagogue (Giebelstadt)
The synagogue in Giebelstadt , a market in the Lower Franconian district of Würzburg , was built in 1911. The synagogue was at 20 Mergentheimer Strasse.
history
In 1799 the first synagogue was built in Giebelstadt. It had to be closed in 1908 due to dilapidation.
In 1911 the Jewish community had the brothers Johann and Roman Scheckenbach from Giebelstadt, who jointly ran a carpentry workshop as builders , draw up the plans for the new synagogue. The building was built that same year.
During the November pogrom in 1938 , the synagogue was demolished by members of the NSDAP and the SA and the rituals were destroyed. The building was initially retained, however, but was demolished in the summer of 1939. A residential building was built on the site of the synagogue.
Commemoration
A memorial plaque in the stairwell of the town hall reminds of the Jewish community and the synagogue with the incorrect inscription: “Until 1941 there was a Jewish community in the community area. The synagogue, built in 1799, was desecrated in 1938 and demolished in 1944. The GIEBELSTADT market commemorates its former Jewish religious community. "
