The synagogue in Groß-Gerau , the district town of the Groß-Gerau district in the southern Rhine-Main area ( Hesse ), was built in 1892 and destroyed during the November pogroms in 1938 . The synagogue was on Frankfurter Strasse.

history

The Jewish community in Gross-Gerau received in 1738 to build a new synagogue permission. It was built in the courtyard of what was then Schafstrasse.

This synagogue became too small for the now larger Jewish community and therefore a new synagogue had to be built. The plans were drawn up by the circular construction technician Lohr and the inauguration took place in 1892.

architecture

The two-story brick building had a west facade that was divided into three parts. The middle risalit towered over the two sides and was crowned by a flat dome . A wide cornice ran around the building below the roof and the bid boards were on this central projection. The three risalites were framed by polygonal pillars , each of which carried small lanterns with a cupola roof. The arched style is visible in the many windows and the domed pillars are stylistic elements of the oriental architecture.

time of the nationalsocialism

The synagogue was desecrated in August 1934. The last service took place in August 1936.

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the synagogue was devastated by SA men and set on fire. The synagogue ruins were demolished in early 1939 and the property was converted into a green area with a parking lot.

Commemoration

In 1978 a memorial stone was placed on the site of the former synagogue. The inscription reads: This is where the church of the Jewish community, built in 1892, stood. It was destroyed on November 9, 1938 on the orders of an inhumane regime. As a warning to the living. The district town of Groß-Gerau.
