The synagogue in Mayen , a town in the Mayen-Koblenz district in Rhineland-Palatinate , was built in 1854/55. The synagogue was on Im Entenpfuhl Street .

history

By the middle of the 19th century, the number of Jewish residents in Mayen increased sharply. That is why the prayer room in Keutelstrasse had become too small and a synagogue had to be built. In 1902 the women's gallery was expanded, with two extensions being built on the long sides of the building.

During the November pogrom in 1938 , SA men smashed the interior of the synagogue and poured petrol over it. The synagogue burned out completely. The actor Mario Adorf , who grew up in Mayen, witnessed the events at the age of eight. The ruin was demolished a little later.

Commemoration

On April 9, 1981, a plaque was inaugurated in memory of the synagogue. It has the inscription: “The synagogue of the Jewish community of Mayen stood here from 1855-1938. It was destroyed on November 10, 1938. The City of Mayen 1980 ”.
