The synagogue in Münstermaifeld , a town in the Mayen-Koblenz district in Rhineland-Palatinate , was built in 1885/86 and devastated during the November pogroms in 1938 . The former synagogue on Severusstrasse has been a cultural monument worthy of protection since 1986 .

history

The Jewish community of Münstermaifeld already owned a synagogue in the Middle Ages , which is known as the Judenschoille in 1429 . In 1816 there is a report of a prayer room in a private house in Brunnengasse, which was established after 1694.

In 1885/86 the Jewish community built a synagogue on a 127 m² property in Severusstrasse, which was renovated in the 1920s.

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the synagogue was devastated and set on fire, the roof structure, interior fittings, gallery and painting were destroyed. The ruin was left to decay.

architecture

The quarry stone building rises on a low pedestal following street level and the entrance can be reached via eight steps. The portal façade is of corner pilaster strip and a stairs fries framed. The gable is crowned by renewed pinnacle-like attachments. There is an inscription plaque between the arched portal and the rose window, and there is a twin window in the gable .

The hall building receives sufficient daylight from two horseshoe arched windows on each side of the eaves . The Torah shrine on the rounded east wall, still visible today, is flanked by two horseshoe arched windows. The synagogue in Münstermaifeld consists of a mixture of style elements typical of the time from oriental and neo-Romanesque architecture. The synagogue was most likely built according to plans by Hermann Nebel (1816–1893).

Todays use

In 1986 the building, which is still owned by the Koblenz Jewish Community , was listed as a historical monument . From 1989 security measures were taken, i. H. the crown of the wall , the window frames and the tap wrenches were renewed. Then the roof was built according to the historical model. Furthermore, glazing, an intermediate gallery with stairs and a basalt floor were installed in cooperation with the Office for Monument Authority . On June 16, 2013, the almost 15-year-old construction work was completed during a ceremony under the patronage of the former Interior Minister of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate , Mr. Karl-Peter Bruch , creating a worthy memorial.

The Förderverein Synagoge Münstermaifeld e. V. endeavored to rebuild the synagogue and hold memorial services every year on November 9th together with the two Christian churches.
