Synagogue (polch)
The synagogue in Polch , a town in the Mayen-Koblenz district in Rhineland-Palatinate , was built in 1876/77 and devastated during the November pogroms in 1938 . The former synagogue at Ostergasse 11 is a monument worth protecting .
history
The Jewish community of Polch initially owned a prayer room in Benjamin Aschel's house on Kirchstrasse. In 1867 she bought a piece of land in today's Ostergasse to build a synagogue. Due to financial difficulties, the construction could only be carried out in 1876/77. The synagogue, presumably built according to plans by Hermann Nebel , was inaugurated in 1877.
time of the nationalsocialism
During the November pogrom in 1938 , the synagogue was set on fire by SA men from Mayen . Although the fire was extinguished quickly, the women's gallery in particular was destroyed. On January 17, 1940, the Jewish community had to sell the synagogue to the political community, which used the building as a warehouse .
architecture
The quarry stone building made of local Krotzen lava stands set back from the street and today has a worthy forecourt. The entrance facade has a rounded corner risalite and a portal with a round arch and skylight. Above the double coffered door there is an inscription tablet with the following Hebrew text: Come, let us worship, and kneel and prostrate before the Lord who made us ( Psalm 95 : 6). The inserted build date is no longer legible. Close to the table is a rose window and a slit-shaped horseshoe arch window sits in the gable triangle . All windows, including the three horseshoe arched windows on the long sides, have tuff walls .
In the choir-like eastern section of the synagogue, the ribs of the stilted arch rest on consoles and two buttresses divert the pressure. Part of the original tendril painting has been preserved on the east side and on the gallery . The recess for the Torah shrine is still clearly visible.
Todays use
From 1981 to 1983 the former synagogue was restored and it has been used for cultural events since May 9, 1984. On the restored gallery there is an exhibition on the history of the Jewish community of Polch.
