The Synagogue of Belleville is a synagogue of the Ashkenazi and Tunisian-Sephardic rite and is located on the corner of Rue Julien-Lacroix at 75 and Rue Pali-Kao at 49 in the 20th arrondissement of Paris . The nearest metro station is Couronnes on line 2 .

history

In 1928 the Association cultuelle israélite de Paris (Israelitische Kultusgemeinde von Paris, ACIP) decided to build a synagogue in northeastern Paris, where many immigrants, mainly from North Africa , were to replace the prayer halls scattered in Belleville and Ménilmontant. For this purpose, a plot of 550 m² was purchased. It was close to former quarries, where the Parc de Belleville was built in 1988 . Two architects were entrusted with the construction of the synagogue: Lucien Hesse and Germain Debré . The Belleville synagogue was inaugurated on May 7, 1930.

architecture

The building is a reinforced concrete structure . No decorative elements were used. The parts of the synagogue are divided into cubes . The hexagonal lantern-like roof structure with large windows is striking .

Towards the street, the synagogue is separated by a concrete wall from the height of a two-story building, behind which there is an inner courtyard. The entrance is now secured by a roller shutter and is reminiscent of a garage entrance. Formerly there was a Hebrew inscription above the entrance , which has been removed. Only the tablets of the law on the wall, which were added later, indicate a sacred building. On the ground floor, the synagogue hall can be extended by two side rooms of almost 100 m² each, which are used as a conference room or prayer room. On the first floor there are two large classrooms next to the women's galleries . The roof terraces serve as playgrounds. The concept of the synagogue corresponds to the model of the community center widespread in the USA and often adopted after the Second World War , which serves both religious and cultural purposes.
