The rue Chasseloup-Laubat synagogue is located at 14 rue Chasseloup-Laubat in the 15th arrondissement of Paris . The nearest metro stations are Cambronne on line 6 and Ségur on line 10 .

history

Since the middle of the 19th century there was a legally independent Jewish community in the 15th district , which had a modest prayer room in the avenue de la Motte-Piquet . Although the number of members had increased mainly due to the immigration of Jews from Eastern Europe , the community could not raise the funds to build its own synagogue. Therefore, the Association cultuelle israélite de Paris (Israelitische Kultusgemeinde von Paris, Acip) decided under its chairman, Baron Edmond de Rothschild , to build a synagogue for the community. She bought a plot of land of 754 m² for this purpose in 1910 and Edmond de Rothschild took over the construction costs - as for the synagogue of Montmartre in Rue Sainte-Isaure and the synagogue of Boulogne-Billancourt . He appointed Lucien Bechmann (1880–1968) as the architect . He entrusted the same architect with the reconstruction of the Hôpital Rothschild , which his father Baron James de Rothschild had founded. The synagogue was inaugurated on September 29, 1913, on the occasion of the Jewish New Year festival Rosh Hashanah .

architecture

Like the synagogues of Neuilly-sur-Seine and Boulogne-Billancourt , the synagogue on Rue Chasseloup-Laubat is built in an oriental style. The round arches of the arcades and windows, the cube capitals of the columns and the corbels are features of Romanesque architecture. A grid separates the property from the street. Behind this is an inner courtyard in which the rabbi's house and the synagogue face each other. Both are made of natural stone and brick .

lobby

In front of the synagogue is a rectangular narthex pierced by three arcades, the central portal of which is framed by two black marble columns and on whose gable the tablets of the law are enthroned. The capitals of the columns are decorated with foliage and stars of David . Stairs lead from this vestibule to the women's galleries , a prayer room and a reception, library and assembly room. A Star of David is depicted on the tympanum above the entrance to the interior and the date of inauguration according to the Jewish calendar : Elul 5673.

inner space

The synagogue has a square plan. The walls are pierced on three sides by eight-part rosettes , the colored glazing of which shows geometric motifs and stars of David. There are wooden galleries on three sides. They are supported by massive wooden beams, like the open roof structure, the end of which is an eight-part lantern into which 24 arched windows are cut. The height of the room including the lantern is 15 meters and corresponds almost to the side lengths of the room of 13 meters. The inscription in French on the large arch above the Torah shrine : Tu aimeras l'Éternel ton Dieu de tout ton cœur (You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, Deuteronomy , 6.5).

Furnishing

Opposite the entrance is the Torah shrine. Like the tablets of the law and the Star of David, it is carved out of wood. The bima stands in front of the Torah shrine and not - as in the orthodox synagogues - in the middle of the ship .
