Schupbach synagogue
The synagogue in Schupbach , a district of the municipality of Beselich in the Limburg-Weilburg district in Hesse , was built in 1877. The former synagogue at Mittelstrasse 36 is a protected architectural monument .
history
In 1816 the first synagogue was built in the village, which was expanded and renovated in 1877. The Jewish community with its branches in Obertiefenbach , Heckholzhausen , Gaudernbach and Wirbelau had around 180 members at that time. Services were held in the synagogue until the high holidays in autumn 1938 .
The synagogue was sold to non-Jewish owners in the neighborhood, which is why it was not destroyed in the November pogrom in 1938 . It was changed by the new owners and used as a storage room.
architecture
The building is a two-story, two-part solid construction made of brick masonry. In the larger part, the synagogue hall was on the first floor and the school room on the ground floor until 1904. The entrance, the staircase, the gallery and the ritual bath ( mikveh ) were located in the smaller part on the side .
In the interior, the change in the original windows can still be seen as unplastered masonry. The ceiling of the prayer room is still in its original state. Golden stars are painted on a blue background. The women's gallery and the mikvah are also still there.
Friends of the Former Synagogue Schupbach e. V.
In February 2010, the Friends of the Former Synagogue Schupbach e. V. founded, which campaigns for the preservation of the synagogue and aimed to acquire the building. On December 9th, 2011, the municipal council of Beselich unanimously decided to purchase the former synagogue. This created the prerequisites for the further renovation of the building. The former synagogue is to serve as a place of reflection and cultural encounter in the future.
