The Dickkopffly-Glasflügler (also: Großer Eichenhochwald-Glasflügler , Kleiner Eichen-Glasflügler ; Synanthedon conopiformis ) is a butterfly from the family of the Glasflügler (Sesiidae). The species is characterized by pronounced mimicry .

The moths have transparent wings that are only scaled on the wing veins , the discal spot and the wing edges. They reach a wingspan of 16 to 19 millimeters. The front wings are very narrow and rounded at the end. There they have an orange stain. They are colored black-brown at the edges. The fringes are brownish. An elongated black-brown discal spot can be seen in the middle, which extends from the front to the rear edge. The hind wings have a narrow dark band. The head, antennae , thorax and abdomen are blue-black to black-green. The body and legs have several yellowish stripes that are reminiscent of the coloration of wasps . The anus tufts are strongly fan-shaped and blue-black in color.

Geographical distribution and occurrence

The thick-headed glass winged fly is widespread in almost all of Europe. It is also found in Asia Minor and North Africa .

Way of life

The diurnal moths fly in the months of June to August, occasionally until the beginning of September. They are particularly active in the sunshine. Very happy then visit the flowers of various plants, such as those of Elderberry ( Sambucus ), thistles ( Cirsium ), Snowball ( Viburnum ), privet ( Ligustrum ) or raspberry ( Rubus idaeus ).

The maggot-shaped caterpillars live under the bark of English oak ( Quercus robur ), sessile oak ( Quercus petraea ) and red oak ( Quercus rubra ) as an annual or biennial .
