from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

TH Gill & Son Ltd. (short: Gill) was a British body manufacturer that manufactured bodies for passenger cars in the first half of the 20th century. At times it was closely associated with All-Weather Motor Bodies , a company operating in the same market segment .

Company history

TH Gill & Son was founded by TH Gill before the outbreak of the First World War . The founder managed the company until 1920; then his son JJ Gill took over the management of the company.

Gill was based in the London borough of Paddington . In 1912 the company produced the first automobile bodies. Gill quickly gained a good reputation and after a few years was considered a specialist in so-called all-weather structures, i.e. H. open multi-seater, which could be completely closed with a tight-fitting fabric top and - mostly insertable - side window panes in bad weather. They were considered technically complex and were accordingly expensive. Gill wasn't tied to a particular chassis manufacturer. Numerous bodies on chassis from Rolls-Royce and Isotta Fraschini are documented . In the literature there are indications that the company temporarily cooperated with the London Isotta-Fraschini importer.

In 1931, Gill founded a subsidiary in the London borough of Kilburn called Gill All-Weather Motor Bodies, later referred to simply as All-Weather Motor Bodies. All-Weather primarily produced bodies for buses . Until 1935, Gill and All-Weather Bodies worked side by side. In 1935 T. H. Gill & Son Ltd. the company. All-Weather Bodies continued manufacturing automobile bodies until 1939. After the end of World War II , All-Weather Bodies did not resume body construction, but continued to operate until 1955. At that time, the company was a repair shop for automobiles.
