The E. Bertelli Ltd. (short: Bertelli ) was a British manufacturer of automobile bodies , which in the 1930s primarily produced superstructures for sports cars from Aston Martin . Bertelli was Aston Martin's preferred bodywork supplier during this period. In addition, Bertelli designed and built a number of individual special bodies for chassis from other luxury class manufacturers.

Company history

E. Bertelli Ltd. was founded by Enrico "Harry" Bertelli. Harry Bertelli was the brother of Domenico Augustus Cesare "Gus" Bertelli , who together with other investors had taken over the financially troubled sports car manufacturer Bamford & Martin in 1926 and restructured it as Aston Martin. Gus Bertelli relocated automobile production from Birmingham to the London borough of Feltham . In the course of the reorganization of the company, Gus Bertelli gave his brother Harry the management of body production in Feltham in 1927. Harry Bertelli also took on the design of the factory-made Aston Martin bodies.

In 1929, the Bertelli brothers outsourced body production. Harry Bertelli founded E. Bertelli Ltd., which was formally independent, but was housed in the Aston Martin plant in Feltham. Bertelli designed and manufactured most of the factory bodies for Aston Martin through 1938. Bertelli's designs were characterized by particularly low structures; they are counted among the most beautiful British bodies of this era.

In addition, the company also clad "a few dozen" chassis from other manufacturers, including four or five Alvis , two chassis each from MG Lagonda and Riley as well as a Bentley 3½ liter and a Bugatti Type 57 . Bertelli also produced bodies for Hudson and Lammas in large numbers .

Gus Bertelli left Aston Martin in 1936 after a disagreement with a co-owner. The following year Harry Bertelli gave up body production and closed the company. Harry Bertelli became a consultant at Atalanta Motors and later started a company that produced fire pumps.
