Herbert Raine & Sons
Herbert Raine & Sons (also: Raine and Raine of Durham ) was a British car body manufacturer who manufactured bodies for commercial vehicles and buses in the 20th century and occasionally also clad passenger cars.
Company history
The company was founded in 1883 by Herbert Raine. It was located in the northern English parish of Spennymoor in County Durham . Raine initially manufactured carriages for commercial purposes, later automobiles with commercial vehicle bodies were manufactured. Since the 1930s at the latest, Raine has also been producing bodies for buses. During the Second World War Raine was busy to a considerable extent repairing damaged army vehicles and, if necessary, fitting them with new bodies.
After the end of the war, Raine continued to manufacture commercial vehicle bodies. In 1949 and 1950, individual bodies for passenger cars were also made, including bodies for the Alvis TA 14 . However, series production did not materialize. It is unclear whether Raine actually intended to expand into the car trade; one source says the automobile bodies were made for promotional purposes only.
In the 1960s, the company gave up manufacturing new bodies. Raine dealt with the repair of commercial vehicles until 2001. After that, the family-run business was closed.
