The Tender locomotives of the series 57001 (also known as 57001 ) represented by the Turkish State Railways (TCDD) were procured between 1933 and 1937. They were intended as multi-purpose locomotives especially for use on the routes of the Ottoman Railway Company (ORC) and Chemin de fer de Smyrne-Cassaba et Prolongements (SCP) north and east of Izmir with their low permissible axle loads, which were nationalized in 1934 and 1935 .

history

After the founding of the republic, the Turkish state gradually took over the lines, which had previously been operated by various private companies, into its own ownership and operation. In 1934 and 1935, the state railway TCDD, founded in 1927, took over the two companies ORC and SCP, which were originally owned by English and French. Both companies operated a route network from Izmir. The ORC routes were mainly in the east with routes to Ödemiş , Denizli and Eğirdir , while the SCP owned routes to Bandırma on the Sea of Marmara and to Afyonkarahisar (then Afyon ) on the Anatolian Railway . Due to the long chaos of the war and insufficient investments by the owners, the lines were in poor condition and only developed for relatively low axle loads.

Based on the passenger and express train locomotives of the series TCDD 46 001-025 supplied by Henschel from 1927 , the TCDD ordered a series of multi-purpose locomotives for the routes around Izmir. Based on the standard steam locomotives of the Deutsche Reichsbahn , the TCDD attached great importance to the most standardized and inexpensive design of their new construction locomotives. Many components were therefore taken over from the 46001 and other TCDD series. In 1933 Krupp delivered six and Henschel four copies. Three locomotives each came from Henschel, Krupp and Schwartzkopff (Berliner Maschinenbau) in 1935/36, followed by eight units delivered by Krupp in 1937.

The locomotives were mainly stationed in Izmir and Afyon and, thanks to their powerful boiler, proved themselves in the intended areas of use. They hauled trains of all types for years. After the introduction of the first combustion railcars, they lost their express train services in the 1950s, but they were quite able to keep the travel times of the railcars with light trains. They were used until the end of the TCDD's steam operation at the end of the 1980s, most recently in 1987 with work train and push services as well as services on the short branch lines east of Izmir. In 1988 there were still operations on the branch line from Sütlaç to Çivril . The TCDD's steam operation officially ended in 1986, but individual locomotives were still in use until around 1990.

technical features

The locomotives of the 57001 series were designed, like the 46001 series locomotives supplied from 1927, taking over proven components from other TCDD series of Prussian origin. Compared to the 46001 series, its axle load was reduced by around three tonnes to just 13.4 tonnes, so that it could also be used on secondary lines and inadequately developed main lines. Like almost all new TCDD locomotives, they were designed as two-cylinder superheated steam locomotives. The boiler and the driver's cab were completely taken over from the 46001 series. The steam cylinder, engine and control system come from the Prussian G 10, which is also available at TCDD as series 55001 . All locomotives received large smoke deflectors . In addition, the steam and regulator dome , each with a sandpit on the top of the boiler, were combined under a common panel.

Preserved locomotives

At least 14 of the machines popular with staff were preserved around 2010, some in poor condition. Copies can be found in the Çamlık Railway Museum near Izmir and the Railway Museum in Ankara , among others , and others are listed as monument locomotives at various stations, for example in Isparta .
