Sodium trimethylsilyl propionate ( TMSP or TSP for short ) is a chemical compound that contains a trimethylsilyl group . TSP is the salt of trimethylsilylpropionic acid, although the literature often does not clearly differentiate between the acid and its salts.
Use in nuclear magnetic resonance
The deuterated variant, in which the four central hydrogen atoms are exchanged for deuterium atoms [C 6 H 9 D 4 NaO 2 Si, 3- (trimethylsilyl) propion-2,2,3,3-d4-acid, sodium salt], is used as the reference substance used in NMR spectroscopy . The reason is that the hydrogen atoms in the methyl groups bonded to the silicon have a significantly different resonance frequency than most organic molecules . The signal thus comes to lie at the edge of the NMR spectrum, where there is hardly any fear of overlapping. A chemical shift of 0 ppm is assigned to the signal .
In organic solvents, tetramethylsilane (TMS) is used instead of TSP .
