TRT World is a Turkish news channel that broadcasts in English around the clock. A stated goal of TRT World is to change the viewers' view of current (“geopolitical”) events; Citizens of other countries should better understand the position of the Turkish AKP government. Critics see the station as foreign propaganda channel of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the government - similar to the transmitter RT of Putin .

The station is based in Istanbul . It is part of the public broadcasting company of Turkey ( Türkiye Radyo ve Televizyon Kurumu ) . The program is aimed at viewers worldwide, it can be received via satellite and cable as well as a live stream on the Internet. In addition to its headquarters in Istanbul, TRT has studios in Washington, DC , London , Mumbai , Singapore , Beijing , Islamabad , Bangkok and Jakarta .

Founding idea

TRT World was founded by TRT in 2015 and started operations on June 30th that same year. The "political stability" of Turkey and the economic upturn in the last 20 years are cited as the drivers for the establishment of the station, which has made Turkey more important regionally and globally. The station has the task of showing the view of Turkey and offering the audience "new perspectives on world events". The target group were originally all Turkic speakers ( Turkic peoples ) and people of the Muslim faith. The content is now aimed at a global audience.

The transmitter is aimed at two mottos. For one thing, there is the saying "the world is bigger than five" (Bigger Than Five) . Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan denounces "the structure of the United Nations ", which has existed since the Second World War. His government repeatedly made it clear that for them the world does not only consist of the USA, Russia, France, Great Britain and China, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council with veto rights, and that other nations are neglected. Another slogan is Where News Inspires Change. TRT World produces documentaries of often "little known peoples and events". The aim here is that such video contributions "bring about changes".

Deutsche Welle (Germany), Al Jazeera (Qatar) and NHK TV (Japan) served as models for TRT World .

Range

TRT World's development was satisfactory for the founders. The own target of 45 million viewers per day was exceeded by far. The average number of viewers per day is currently 79 million. So the first thoughts came to be broadcast in other languages in addition to English. TRT Arabi broadcasts in Arabic and has been converted into a news channel along the lines of TRT World. In December 2019, TRT started the beta phase for TRT Deutsch . In May 2020, TRT Russian also started the beta phase. The two areas currently do not operate a television station. Like TRT World, they produce short videos for social media and have a news and analytics website.

criticism

Critics see a clear propaganda mandate in the station. This impression is reinforced by the placement of paid advertising clips on YouTube (2018); in it, for example, TRT turns against Western support for the Kurdish militia .

After the attempted coup in 2016 , 35 journalists who had recently joined the station resigned, including news director Juan Carlos Van Meek. One of those who gave notice stated

“I no longer hold out any hope that this channel will become what I wanted it to become (…) After the coup, it became very apparent that the channel had no intention of actually covering it properly, in a professional, international broadcast standard. ”

"I no longer have any hope that this channel will be what I wanted (...) After the coup it became very obvious that the station had no intention of portraying things truthfully - on the standard of professional, international stations."

The manager stated that he had never received a phone call from Ankara trying to frame the show or give them something to talk about.
