T Tauri (short: T Tau ) is a variable star in the constellation Taurus . He is the prototype of the T-Tauri stars .
T Tauri was discovered by John Russell Hind in 1852 . Seen from Earth, it appears between the stars of the Open Star Cluster of the Hyades , not far from ε Tauri , but is in reality much further away at around 580 light years. The leading "T" in the name follows the rules for naming variable stars and states that T Tauri is the third variable star discovered in the constellation Taurus. Its apparent brightness varies irregularly between 9.3 and 13.5 mag.
Like all T Tauri stars, T Tauri is also young, only a few million years old. It is related to the reflection nebula NGC 1554-1555 ( Hindscher Nebel , vdB 28), which varies its brightness noticeably.
Recent studies suggest that the system is a triple system . The brightest component T Tauri N therefore has the two companions T Tauri Sa and T Tauri Sb .
