Taşköy ( Turkish for stone village , Aramaic Arbo ) is a Christian-Aramaic village in the district of Nusaybin in the province of Mardin in southeastern Turkey in the Tur Abdin mountain range . The Arameans belong to the Syrian Orthodox Church of Antioch . The original village name means "monastery" or "convent".
location
Arbo is located approx. 30 km southeast of Midyat and is surrounded by the following other villages - the distance information applies to existing road connections:
Midyat 28 km |
Dogançay 28 km |
Mor Gabriel Monastery 16 km |
Yemişli 16 km |
Sarıköy 15 km |
|
Üçköy 7 km |
Dibek 14 km |
climate
The seasons are very distinctive. There is a lot of rainfall in spring and autumn, hot and dry summers, cold and snowy winters. The temperatures fluctuate between −10 ° C in winter to +50 ° C in summer.
population
Arbo was meanwhile without a population. Although 30 families lived here until 1980, the last inhabitants emigrated in 1989: the family of the mayor.
Reconstruction measures have only been initiated by the former residents and the following generation (organized in an Arbo association) for a few years, as the legal situation has improved. So currently 9 houses have been newly built and are regularly inhabited as well as partly used as a summer residence for vacation by the Arameans, who mostly live in the diaspora . The population fluctuates in this regard and will only be able to stabilize for the foreseeable future, depending on the political situation in Turkey.
history
Arbo is mentioned as far back as Roman times. Around 1400 it was the only Christian village to be spared by the Tatars . At the time of the genocide of the Assyrians and Arameans around 1916, 70 families lived in Arbo, who found refuge in the monasteries of Mor Malke and Mor Eliyo due to the massacre.
Churches and monasteries
The church ruins of Mor Eschajo and Mor Schmuni as well as the remains of the Mor Schimun monastery near Arbo bear witness to the former importance of the small village.
The reconstruction measures also included the restoration of the sacred buildings, so that the Joldath Aloho Church (Mother of God Church) has been completely renovated since August 2015.
Due to new decrees in May 2018, churches, cemeteries and other properties were transferred to the Kloster-Mor-Gabriel-Stiftung. As a result, the two churches of Mor Schalito and Mor Dimet, in which there are several patriarchal and bishop's graves, were restored in August 2018 and made accessible to the public again with an opening service.
