The town of Tabant ( Central Atlas Tamazight ⵜⴰⴱⴰⵏⵜ Tabant ) is the market and administrative center of the Aït Bougoumez valley in the Azilal province in Morocco . Tabant is the capital of a rural community (commune rurale) with numerous villages and a total of around 15,000 inhabitants (as of 2014).

location

The place Tabant lies at an altitude of approx. 1860  m in the southeast of the Aït Bougoumez valley at the foot of the over 4000 m high Jbel-M'Goun massif. The nearest larger city is the provincial capital Azilal , which is about 70 to 80 km (driving distance) in a north-westerly direction . The villages Timit and Ibakliwin , which also belong to the municipality , are only about 4 km to the west and 2 km to the east, respectively.

population

The population consists mostly of members of various Berber tribes . A regional dialect of the Central Atlas Tamazight is spoken as well as Moroccan Arabic and some French.

economy

Most of the inhabitants of the comparatively fertile Aït Bougoumez Valley, which often enables two harvests per year, are farmers who grow grain (wheat, barley) and vegetables (potatoes, beans, onions, tomatoes, etc.) on their small plots. In the last decades of the 20th century, ( trekking )
tourism gained a certain importance for the income situation of the population.

History and sights

There are no written records of the history of the place. Worth seeing are from rammed earth built houses of the villages around Tabant and the - at times snowy - towered M'Goun massif landscape.

Trekking

Guided hiking and trekking tours are offered almost all year round, as part of which you can also climb the elongated chain of peaks of the Jbel M'Goun massif, which is up to 4071 m high.
