The golden yellow to dark yellow to bright orange flowers are up to 3 centimeters long and have the same diameter. Your bracts are spread out. The spherical to depressed spherical fruits are slightly beaked. They are brownish green to wine red or brownish red, up to 3.8 centimeters long and contain few seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Tacinga saxatilis is distributed in northeastern Brazil in the states of Bahia and Minas Gerais at altitudes of 450 to 700 meters. It was first described as Platyopuntia saxatilis in 1979 by Friedrich Ritter . Nigel Paul Taylor and Wolfgang Hermann Stuppy placed them in the genus Tacinga in 2002 .

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Tacinga saxatilis subsp. saxatilis
  • Tacinga saxatilis subsp. pomosa (PJBraun & Esteves) PJBraun & Esteves
  • Tacinga saxatilis subsp. occibahiensis (PJBraun & Esteves) PJBraun & Esteves
  • Tacinga saxatilis subsp. minutispina (PJBraun & Esteves) PJBraun & Esteves

  • Tacinga saxatilis subsp. estevesii ( Opuntia estevesii was transferred as a subspecies to Tacinga , but recombined again to the species Tacinga estevesii in 2015 )

Tacinga saxatilis is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Least Concern (LC) ", d. H. not endangered, classified. The development of the populations is considered stable.

When the list was revised in 2013, the subspecies ' Tacinga estevesii' (PJBraun) PJBraun was recognized by the IUCN and the species is now classified as " Endangered (EN) ". H. listed as endangered. The classification was based on the very small distribution area of about 625 km², the only three known locations of the species and the continued reduction of plants through mining activities in the habitat areas. The development of the population is seen as decreasing.
